This weekend, the World Cup of Poker will take place, thanks to their sponsors PokerStars. This prestigious event started in 2004, marking this year to be the 11th year it has run. For those that do not know about this tournament, it is where various qualifying countries send their best poker players, in order to battle it out and become the top country in this card game.
This great poker tournament will take place on the island of Malta, starting on Saturday and going up until Sunday night; where the winner will be presented with the Poker’s World Cup. We expect to see a lot of great things from the players, being that they are the best each country has.
This year, there are 8 countries competing, along with five of their best players:
- #TeamUSA: Isaac Haxton, Olivier Busquet, Vanessa Selbst, Dan Smith, Bryn Kenney.
- #TeamUK: Louis Salter, Jack Salter, Simon Deadman, Oliver Price, Sam Trickett.
- #TeamCanada: Marc-Andre Ladouceur, Sorel Mizzi, Andrew Chen, Jonathan Duhamel, Ami Barer.
- #TeamGermany: Christopher Frank, Ole Schemion, Marvin Rettenmaier, George Danzer, Philipp Gruissem.
- #TeamFrance: Patrick Bruel, Erwann Pecheux, Bertrand Grospellier, Sylvain Loosli, Paul Tedeschi.
- #TeamRussia: Aleksey Bilokur, Anatoly Filatov, Vladimir Troyanovskiy, Ivan Soshnikov, Vitaly Lunkin.
- #TeamItaly: Rocco Palumbo, Dario Sammartino, Mustapha Kanit, Andrea Dato, Giuliano Bendinelli.
- #TeamUkraine: Alex Dovzhenko, Eugene Katchalov, Oleksandr Gnatenko, Oleksii Khoroshenin, Igor Yaroshevky.
The last winner of the cup was team Russia, so I would expect them to try and defend their title this year; along with team USA, Italy, and Germany looking for their second victory.
PokerStars will be streaming this great event, so you can check out all the action live at their YouTube channel.
